MAVERICK TRADITION
The Maize South baseball program began in March of 2010. Without any seniors the first school year, we kicked off our first season with a junior led squad and 3 coaches. The Mavericks recorded a record of 9-12 in their first year as a program. The Mavericks were not assigned a league that year, so they traveled to Dodge City, Garden City, Hays, and Emporia for their road games while having a few at home.
In 2011, the Mavericks led by their 3 seniors, qualified for the 4A State tournament with a 15-9 record defeating Kingman (10-0), Andale (7-0), and Clearwater in the regional championship (9-0) to start a tradition of state tournament appearances.
The Mavericks have qualified for the Kansas state tournament 6 out of their 11 years as a program and compiled a record of 168 wins and 81 loses (.674 win %) Unfortunately, the Mavericks lost the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mavericks have also produced multiple All-League, All-State, and All-Metro (Wichita Eagle Newspaper) winners. Additionally, the Mavericks have produced two ABCA Region 5 All-Americans, a USA Today All-American, and a Max Preps All American. The Mavericks have had several players move into the JUCO and NCAA ranks.
The Mavericks breathe a rich tradition centered around commitment, discipline, and respect. The 2017 team won the program's first state title and remains the symbol for all current players and all of the great Maverick players who came before them!
