CHAD CHRISTENSEN: HEAD COACH
|
Coach Christensen is a Northern Arizona (Mingus Union High School) native who made his way to Kansas (from Northern Arizona University) to play baseball at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Ks. While there, the Blue Jays won their league all three years, and at the time in 1994, set the baseball record for most wins in program history. Coach Christensen graduated in 1995 and accepted a teaching position at Maize Intermediate School. In the spring of 1997, he joined the Eagle's baseball staff at Maize High under Head Coach Larry Harvington. In 1999 Coach Christensen assumed the role of head JV coach under new head coach Rocky Helm. During his time at Maize High, Coach Christensen was a part of 2 state championships.
In 2009 Maize South High Principal John Blazek asked Coach Christensen to take over the new reigns at MSHS. In that time along with the help of his knowledgeable and hard-working staff, the Maverick program has risen to one of the top programs in the state. In 2017 they won their first state championship in Division 4A-I. Coach Christensen is a 3-time Kansas Coach of the Year selected by the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches, an All-Metro Coach of the Year selected by the Wichita Eagle, and a 4-time AVCTL Division Coach of the Year. He is married to his wife Audra and has two beautiful daughters (Paige and Leah.) |
ANDREW MOORE
|
Coach Moore was born and raised in Wichita, KS. He attended Word of Life High School and was a 3 sport athlete, but excelled primarily in baseball. He was a shortstop, center fielder, pitcher, and catcher at Word of Life. After graduating in 2003, Coach Moore spent his collegiate career playing baseball at Butler County Community College and Wichita State University as a catcher. After college, Coach Moore began his coaching career at Maize South under Coach Christensen in 2009 when the program started. In addition to coaching high school baseball, Coach Moore also teaches physical education at MSMS. Along with coaching the Mavericks, Coach Moore has also coached several summer teams at the high school and collegiate level including the Kansas Cannons and Wichita Warhawks. Coach Moore returns to Maize South in 2022 for his 13th season with the Maize South Mavericks. Coach Moore is married to his wife Steffanie they have one son, Moses.

WES PHILLIPS

Coach Phillips returns to where it all started. He was a four-year Letterman and part of a freshmen group that committed to MSHS (2009-2013) in its first year. After receiving numerous post-season awards at his time at MSHS, Coach Phillips committed to Wichita State to play baseball. In the winter of his sophomore year, he transferred to Cisco Community College (2105) and finished his playing career at East Carolina University. While there, Coach Philips and his Pirates won their NCAA regional and made their way to an NCAA Super Regional (2016). Coach Phillips graduated with a degree in Interpersonal Communication. In the summer of 2017 Coach Philips signed with the Wichita Wingnuts to pursue his professional career. The Wingnuts were runners-up in the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball championships in 2017.

DUSTIN RUSH

Coach Rush grew up in Hutchinson, KS and attended Buhler High School where he was a two sport athlete. After high school, Coach Rush attended Hutchinson Community College and entered the workforce while going to school. His passion for baseball never ended and he earned a scholarship after taking two years off to play for the Tabor College Blue Jays. Coach finished his playing career pitching for Tabor for two years while majoring in Physical Education and Health. Coach Rush started his teaching career in January of 2020 at the school he currently teaches, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Elementary School in Wichita. Coach Rush also has been coaching 8th grade football at Eisenhower Middle School since 2020. He is excited to join the Mavericks coaching staff to kick off his baseball coaching career at a great program like Maize South.

ANDY PRESTON

A Hutchinson, KS native, Coach Preston attended Buhler HS where he was 3 sport athlete that excelled on the diamond and the basketball court. After graduating in 2004, Coach Preston started his collegiate career at Garden City Community College where he earned All-Jayhawk and Region VI honors both years and led the Bronc-busters to a Conference Championship and one game shy of the JUCO World Series.
From there Coach Preston had Division 1 stops at Purdue University and Loyola Marymount University. Collegiate summer stops included the prestigious Alaska League where his Kenai Oilers were league champions in 2006 and Coach Preston earned 1st Team honors at first base. 2007, Coach Preston led the Santa Barbara Foresters to 3rd place NBC World Series finish and set the single-season record for RBI’s, finished in the top 5 in hits, top 10 in OPS (on-base plus slugging), and earned numerous postseason accolades. In 2008 after his time at Loyola Marymount, Coach Preston signed with the Southern Illinois Miners in the Frontier League and pursued his professional baseball career. Coach Preston finished his education degree in 2010 at Wichita State University and began his teaching and coaching career at the high school level with stops at Valley Center, Mill Valley and Newton High School. Coach Preston has spent 10 of his last 12 years at Newton High School as a math teacher as well as an assistant baseball coach and the head boys’ basketball coach for the past 5 seasons. Coach Preston is excited for his first year with the Maize South Maverick baseball program.
